Lancaster House is one of London’s finest town houses, steeped in political history and magnificently preserved. It has entertained more heads of state, politicians and celebrities than any other venue in London. Throughout the 19th century, Stafford House (as it was known then), was a hub of social and political life. As the family home to the Sutherlands, it attracted many distinguished guests and artists, including factory reformer Lord Shaftesbury, anti-slavery author Harriet Beecher Stowe and Italian nationalist leader Guiseppe Garibaldi.
Almost as influential as the visitors was the decor, which set the fashion for London reception rooms for nearly a century. The Louis XIV interiors created a stunning backdrop for the Sutherlands’ impressive collection of paintings and objets d’art, many of which can be still be seen in the house today. Queen Victoria’s words to the Duchess of Sutherland upon arriving at Lancaster House were ‘I have come from my house to your Palace’.
Please note the dress code for the dinner is business attire.
