John Hitchens


PwC career

John Hitchens joined PwC in 1976 after studying history at Oxford University. He has been based in London throughout his career apart from a tour as a manager to Hong Kong from 1980-1983. He became a partner in 1988. From 1998 – 2010 John served as the UK firm’s banking industry practice leader and currently serve as the global IFRS accounting consulting services leader.

John has specialised in bank auditing and advisory services throughout his career.  His audit  clients have included Euroclear, Lloyds Banking Group, The Bank of England, Bank of Ireland, Britannia Building Society, Barclays,  JP Morgan Chase and Nomura.  He has carried out a wide variety of advisory work for other banks including advising on corporate governance, high level controls &  regulatory issues.  John has also led a number of investigations for banking regulators. 

John is a regular speaker on bank accounting, auditing and regulatory matters.

Other professional experience

Until July 2010 John was Chairman of the Banking Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and a Board member of the Institute’s Financial Services Faculty.  John is a member of the Institute’s Business Law Committee.

John serves as the PwC representative on the IASB IFRS Advisory Council.
